The purpose of search
engine optimisation is improve
rankings and the placement of your website in the search results of search
engines, effective optimisation
can bring a highly significant increase
in targeted and pre qualified
visitors to your site.
Visitors that find you by entering appropriate
search terms into a search engine are effectively pre
qualified they are looking for your products or services, the
main objective of optimisation
is to get your website link displayed
as near to the top of results as possible in response to that
search.
It is amazing
how your targeted visitors will increase
by improving your placement in the results pages by just a couple of places.
Rainbow Data
can optimise your site as
we create it, this is the most cost
effective way to proceed, that said search engine optimisation
can be undertaken at any time to good effect.
Search
engine optimisation starts with research
into the products or services you wish to promote, researching
your competition and investigating
the key phrases people use to search for your product.
A successful
website can hold its position by
organic growth as your site expands its ranking and importance to the
search engines improves.
Many search engines use the following criteria
to determine the placement of result on search pages:
Recency
|
How long has your site been listed, you may see a
slight gain on an initial listing
this quickly levels then improves after as time proceeds. |
Popularity |
How many visitors do you get this is natural growth feature slow
but very worthwhile. |
Importance |
Search engines grade your site by many methods and tend to be very
secretive about exact details,
all things being equal the following effect importance: size = the
no of pages, the number and importance of sites that link back to
your site this is sometimes called link popularity, the numbers of browsers searching for your site and sometimes
the payment of fees, some search engines and directories insist on
payment. Google is considered to be the best mix of paid insertion and natural placement and is responsible for a large proportion of site traffic . |
Page relevance |
How well the site description, title and meta data matches your
site purpose this is a hard one and the search
engines algorithm are constantly reviewed to give the search engines
a good reputation for returning relevant results. at the moment
this is still very crude but Google do it very well. |
Site relevance |
As above but it rewards sites that have a consistent theme throughout
with subsections that dealt well with related topics. this leads to
sites that repeat descriptions and text across pages fairing well
e.g. Motor sales. Motor repairs, Motor exchanges, Motor insurance,
etc. etc. A
human would connect pages such as Doctor , Dentist, Surgeon, Heath
worker, etc. but the Robots used by search engine lack this acuity
to any great depth. |
Link integrity |
It is important that all your links work well and consistently. |
Currency |
Keep your site up to date and
current, |
Hosting reliability |
generally reliability of web servers is very good but if your is
down when search engines try to
spider your site you ranking will eventually suffer. |
Negative Content |
Placing information on your site such as Under Construction
and a few other similar terms will have negative
effects, search engines will also make decisions as to whether your
site is complete this is a tricky one so be careful to check your
site before submitting to the search engines. |
Indecent
and illegal content |
This is a whole separate
area but generally only specialist search engines will support so
called adult sites. |
Paid inclusion
Paid submission |
Paying the search engines for inclusion can effect your placement
but it is expensive and often
gives no guarantees, paid submission is one way to avoid the delays
that free submission can incur.
There is a large industry offering
paid submission and inclusion but take great care to ensure you
get what you pay for, it is not wise to pay for services that are
not supported by a written agreement from a trusted company. The pay per click schemes are the most cost effective for the smaller companies giving a good immediate entry on to some of the top search engines and directories.
The problem is many search engines
and directories do not have a mechanism for free inclusion your
only option with these is to pay, choose wisely |
1000 search engines |
A small number of search
engines provide the vast bulk of visitors I like Google, Yahoo,
Lycos, MSN, "dmoz the Open
Directory Project". Hotbot, it is my opinion that these are
the main ones to consider.
Many other search engines exist
so please don't let me stop you investigating but be aware that
your email address could quickly end up overloaded by spam, some
are only there to harvest email addresses.
